Who Are You Being When You Eat

Our western culture and healthcare system generally acknowledges the role of stress in disease formation, immunity suppressing, weight gain, sleep quality, intellectual processing, etc.  So I often ask clients:

Where in your day do you find some relaxed moments that really nourish your body and soul?

I often get blank stares, guffaws, chuckles, and all kinds of reasons why they can’t find relaxed time during the day.

“I cannot possibly find time to relax or [insert thing here that you KNOW would nourish your body and soul but you can’t seem to make time for it].  

Can you relate to this thought? If this is you, as it was me just 5 years ago, I encourage you to start with making your meals opportunities to truly nourish and relax.

Bring to mind what your meals and even your snack time looks like during the day. If you are eating any meals standing up, in the car, at the computer while you continue working, or in less than 5 minutes, you would likely benefit from integrating mindful eating into your day. In fact, even if you are eating the healthiest most well-balanced meals for your body, if you are stressed and not relaxed when you are eating, you are not getting the benefit of that high quality food.

Here’s a nice little NPR story as background.

Digestion is interrupted and impaired by stress (amped up sympathetic nervous system). Further, metabolism and digestion is enhanced with a relaxed state of mind and body (turned on parasympathetic response). People often report big changes in their bodies by integrating these simple tips.

Some simple tips for eating mindfully:

  • As you sit down to eat, take a moment to notice what is in front of you – note colors, smells, and emotions. Notice your appetite. Even if it is not the highest quality choice of food, just notice it and find appreciation for the opportunity. Express your gratitude through a blessing if that is your habit – or start a new habit.
  • Each bite, focus on the smell, texture, taste of that bite in your mouth.
  • If breakfast usually takes you 5 minutes, stretch it to 10. Set a timer, sit down. If lunch takes you 10 minutes to eat, stretch it to 20.
  • Chew every bite at least 10 times.
  • Put your utensils down between bites.
  • Throughout the meal, whether you are dining with someone or by yourself, notice your breath. Slow it way down.  Integrate a long, slow breath between bites.
  • Did I mention, sit down?

Who are you being when you eat? Where is your mind?

If it wanders to the not-so-calm excitement of the day, can you bring the mind back to a place that is simply here and now with the food in front of you? Remember that any little step towards this intention of staying present, is a step towards a more relaxed state.  Just start taking baby steps – even if these tips seem impossible to integrate.  Start where you are.

September is the New January

Now that Labor Day has come and gone, welcome the shift that comes with the calendar changing.  Whether you are involved in the whole back to school hoopla or you are just acknowledging the shift into autumn and autumn activities, September is a great time to revisit and reassess goals and desires for your health, relationships, well-being, and really all aspects of your life.

With the all the external shifts in our community and culture, our routines, and in the weather as summer draws to a close, where can we choose to focus on any small internal shift that will lead to calm contentment with less ego, less inner sabotage, less need to control?

Do you desire a shift at the core level?

Is there some health goal that continues to allude you even though you have tried many approaches? Does anxiety affect your day to day living and hamper your enjoyment of the present moment?

Every week (Sunday night or Monday morning), I check in with my intentions, my to do list, my big picture items to help me stay focused on what I have determined is really foundational in my life. Did I drop any balls last week? Probably, so I pick up where I left off and keep going.

Perhaps you have an area of your life where you just don’t have the energy to pick up the proverbial dropped ball.  That can happen.  No reserves even though you have the desire to shift the energy in your life, sometimes you can’t muster the UMPH to make it so.

Messengers

I have recently returned to a regular yoga practice thanks to an unlimited summer yoga pass at the lovely blue lotus studio. Besides the incredible gift to myself to attend three to four classes a week, I have been reminded how powerful it is to just embrace what is accessible that day. Pigeon Pose not happening today? I’m rocking a gentle Figure Four stretch instead…

A yogi leading a class is a rather obvious teacher of awesome and useful nuggets of info.

What about the less obvious of our teachers? I mean the really less obvious ones: The antagonistic neighbor, our children, the irritating co-worker, the pattern we keep repeating and wish that we wouldn’t.

What if every experience and interaction were regarded as an opportunity to grow, to receive wisdom or guidance, to be supported, to show compassion, to practice being calm?

I have been getting curious for the last couple of years: When experiencing a less than pleasant interaction or experience, can I notice if there is any shift or choice I can make towards staying calm and present? I Ask: What am I learning here? What is the message here? 

Some days, staying with this intention is easier than others.

Any little steps towards opening our mind and heart to the teacher… the messenger… in the midst of some conflict or challenge will be beneficial. Even when making little steps, we still make progress.

Consider: The more challenging it is to move through the emotions that come up while intending to stay grounded in a situation, the more opportunity for growth. What if I can, even for a moment, become an observer of what is happening in my mind?

Ask: What’s the lesson in drenching the interior of my car after leaving the sunroof open on a night of torrential storms? Locking my keys in my car at my kid’s school? Losing my patience in the moment with one of my kids. Or ultimately, what’s the message in grumpy frustration and beating myself up for the choices that led to the aforementioned moments?

You might be thinking, “Okay, what’s deeper lesson about flooding your car from above?”

Well, here’s what I learned and experienced:

  • It’s just a car. So what if it is the most valuable thing I own besides my house.
  • I can stay calm and trust that this is all going to be okay. There is no way that I could contently be mopping up my car if this had happened three years ago.  I would have been bitter and pissed off about my “stupidity”.
  • Cars dry really fast in the sun with the sunroof open.

The most valuable “teacher” of all that was the realization that I have developed considerable “chill out” qualities (a.k.a. mindfulness) over the last four or five years. I wasn’t beating myself up and I truly didn’t care if anyone judged me for leaving the roof open. It was a moment of “well, that just happened”. Truly.

Let’s keep having the curiosity to take a step back in the next challenging or even simply perplexing moment we encounter. Open your heart to hear the message or the lesson meant for you.  I have complete confidence that even a little step in that direction is possible for you.

Who benefits from a health coach

A bit of wisdom:

“You can’t loan someone money if you don’t have any money in the bank.”

This came from one of my clients when we were talking about being depleted by the events, choices, and interactions of the day.  The client was realizing that she was getting tapped out supporting others and didn’t have the time to take care for herself.

Wanted to touch base with you about Ql Gong and my feelings.  First, each time I [practice Qi Gong] my hands get very warm and a little tingly.  Second, I have been falling asleep much quicker than before and I haven’t been waking up during the night, getting 6 to 7 hrs of uninterrupted sleep.
